About Ty

Inspired by pirates and seduced by gnarly problems, I'm a UX leader and doodler who loves solving challenging business problems. With 15+ years of experience, I have a knack for turning complex challenges into simple, user-friendly software that drives real results.

My design philosophy

I break down big challenges into manageable parts, using data-informed decisions to boost business value and increase revenue. At the heart of my design process is the pursuit of shared understanding and alignment. I believe that great design:

  • Bridges the gap between what a user needs and the business’s goals
  • Obviates the need for documentation – if users can’t figure it out, we haven’t done our job
  • Deep dives into complex topics to craft truly usable and accessible experiences

I’ve helped companies:

Leadership style

As a leader, I’m committed to:

  • Empowering team members to do their best work
  • Providing flexibility and support, just as I appreciate receiving
  • Investing time in coaching and mentoring to set others up for success
  • Celebrating and advocating for my team’s achievements

I believe that a leader’s success is measured by the growth and accomplishments of their team. As one of my former direct reports put it, I strive to see “the person, not just the employee.”

Beyond design

When I’m not designing or doodling fantasy maps or making sketchnotes, I’m hanging out with my family doing something fun or fixing something around the house. 🤪

I’m also passionate about typography and have a website dedicated to it (whatstype.com)—it’s long overdue for an update, and it’s on my to-do list.

Let’s connect

I’m always excited to take on new challenges and create amazing things. Whether you’re looking for a designer who can dig into and help build something awesome, a design leader who can align complex stakeholder needs, or a mentor to help grow your team’s capabilities, let’s team up and make something great together!
